European Projects

We established an international project with schools from Turkey, Germany, England and Denmark. The focus of the project, led by Mrs Conley and Mrs Storey, was to further develop self esteem and confidence in children with special educational needs. Mrs Conley and Mrs Storey visited one of the partner schools in Denmark in November 2007.

In 2008-09 staff and pupils from all the schools in the project visited St Joseph's.They had the opportunity to see our school as well as the beautiful Northumberland countryside and famous landmarks like the Roman Wall and Alnwick Castle. In 2009 several of our staff and pupils went on visits to Denmark, Germany and Turkey. The project was a huge success with an international cookbook being published.

In 2012-13 we started another project with our link schools in Germany and were joined by an Austrian school. The focus of the project is sport and the project is called Time to Move.. We held a large sports event in Hexham in June 2013 which involved all our pupils and over thirty from Austria and Germany. Reciprocal visits took place throughout 2013-14 with over twenty of our pupils going to Hamm and Gummersbach in Germany and Salzburg in Austria.

Mrs Armstrong organises a biennial trip to Amsterdam for pupils in Y7/8 to visit Anne Frank's house. The pupils have studied Anne's diary as part of a writing project. The pupils work is sent to the Anne Frank museum and put on display.

France and Belguim

The school organises a biennial trip to north east France which includes visits to Ypres and Bruges in Belguim. The pupils have an opportunity to practise their French speaking and also learn about the First World War (1914-18) which was mainly fought in this area in what was known as the Western Front.

Every year there is a week's ski trip to the French Alps for pupils mainly in Y8. This year they will stay in the resort of Risoul which is about a three hour coach journey south east of the city of Grenoble
